This guerilla film-making enterprise was photographed entirely on a spring wound Bolex camera using available light. It is one of the most primitive and low-budget film productions I've worked on, but is still highly stylized, hip, and one of many productions that I am very proud of. Working as the director, cinematographer, and editor, I had a great opportunity to execute my vision's visual aesthetics. I was also instrumental in Producing the soundtrack to the piece.

The piece was shot on various Kodak stocks. Film was processed at MPL in Nashville. Film to tape transfer took place at the now defunct Henninger Elite Post in Nashville.

This campaign aired in various markets in the United States.

Music Video
Client: Luke Town

This music video for Kansas City performing artist Luke Town received some airplay on Great American Country (G.A.C.).

One of the special effects I employed on this project was to shoot the film at 40 fps while the playback sync track was sped up 33.3%. When the footage was transfered to video, it was transfered at 30fps.

In case you're not good at math, that means when the footage was synced up with the song, the lip sync matched perfectly, but everything else has a slight slow-mo feel to it. It worked well to suggest that the character Luke played was from another time and place.

I was very excited to get this gig as it is one of my favorite and proudest of concepts that I've written. My interpretation of the song was one that Luke Town hadn't considered, and one that draws tears from even the toughest of guys.

A special thanks to all of the crew that volunteered their time on this low-budget project. Selina Hood was the producer. She did a great job, and has moved on to do some great things in the windy city. RSVP Productions provided the production and post-production support. Alex Fischer was the gaffer who worked the entire long day, and was involved in a lot of the preproduction. Bill Gilbert provided a generator, Fisher 11 dolly, and some lighting gear. Steven G. Fracol, SOC, provided a great rental deal on his Arri SR-4 camera package. Thank you all.

Music Video

This music video aired on MTV's 120 Minutes and was in regular rotation on M2.

I produced this video in 1997 with two days notice. The cinematography was executed at various frame rates - from 3 to 30 fps. Most of the footage was transfered to video at the same rate it was shot at so that the action is all in real time. The result was a piece that had a lot of different textures - changing from shot to shot. It was a fun project as the cinematographer.

I also edited the piece. Mike Lewis, the band's leader and my contact, complimented me in the edit suite. As I was "punching" the marks for ins and outs, he asked me if I were a drummer. I responded, "No. Why?" He said that I possessed a complex sense of rhythm that he's only seen in drummers." Thanks, Mike.

Puller was formerly called "For Love Not Lisa" and they had a song that made the soundtrack to the Brandon Lee film "The Crow".

The Christmas Train is a narrow-gauge train that runs through Dry Gulch, USA in Adair, Oklahoma. Dry Gulch, USA is a children's summer camp in the summer with an old west theme. The camp is also used as a western town set with all the trimmings, of which I was the Director of Photography (cinematography and videography).

This commercial was shot on film using Kodak's 7277 and 7279 Vision stocks. The film was processed at CineFilm in Atlanta, and transferred at The Filmworker's Club, Nashville.

This commercial spot aired in various midwest region markets.

Episodic Dramatic Narrative

The evolution of this episodic western began long before my involvement with it. It started off as a multi-camera video production, but when I became involved with the project, we started shooting single-camera video. As the popularity of the program increased, we eventually moved on to shooting Super 16mm.

I had the opportunity to recommend and oversee the purchase of over a half million dollars of film acquisition, grip/electric, tungsten and HMI lighting, and post-production equipment to upgrade the production quality of the series.

The production was shot primarily on Kodak's 7245 and 7248 film stocks. Film processing was executed at CineFilm, Atlanta. The film was color corrected and transferred to video at the now defunct Henninger Elite Post, Nashville.

I had two weeks to put this video together while trying to coordinate everything with my client who was on the other side of the Pacific Ocean. It was a low budget project, but my client from Taipei, Taiwan told me that this music video aired on MTV China...although I have no way to confirm this.

The guy in the cowboy hat is a good friend of mine, Randall Stephens. He actually did the collage on the wall himself. If you go to the sidebar on the right and watch "Montage Three", that soundtrack is his band, "Jetenderpaul." He is also a history professor in Boston and just had a book that came out. Check his book out here.

I had the opportunity to shoot this documentary of Dennis Raider, aka BTK, during the week of his sentencing in Wichita, Kansas. All of the players in this real life drama were at the Sedgwick County Courthouse to impress upon the judge the harshest penalty possible. We were there to capture the story from their own mouths.

MSNBC hired 44 Blue Productions to produce three one-hour pilot episodes of a concept called "City in Fear". MSNBC picked up the series, and for a while, 44 Blue was considering making our piece a two hour special because of the compelling footage we captured.

What a hoot this project was. I had a difficult time keeping my shots steady because I was always laughing so hard! Don't worry - I did. The difficult part was working in a small confined space and not shooting any one of our five man crew and two producers with a mirror covering an entire wall.

This is what happens when you take a L.A. hair stylist and transplant him into a retirement communities' hair salon in a suburb of Kansas City. Paul Parkey showed up with his bald head, which was about the only piece of flesh on his body that wasn't tattooed, only to have some manners and discipline whipped into him by the salon's manager, Rosa.

Over the course of four days, not only was he softened up, but the little elderly ladies fell in love with him...but not before he gave a ninety-some year old blue hair a faux hawk the day before Easter services.

It's a fun episode to watch. If you missed it's airing on the Style network back in July of 2007, you can download it and many other episodes at the iTunes store.

Irene Skare, the lady holding the rollers, and Paul made a special connection. Within a month of the shoot, she went on to better places to find her "fellar with a convertible" sporting a hot new quaff. God bless you, Irene.

This project was to honor Eric Langhorst, a Kansas City Metro teacher, for his use of technology in the classroom. We had one school day to shoot with the students changing every 45 minutes. It was a little crazy at times, but the end product looks great!

Julie Zastrow, of Viva Creative in Rockville, MD (a burb of Washington, D.C.), led the production and did a very nice job. Our crew this day was great. Seth Lesko of RSVP Productions providing audio services; Stewart Redwine as gaffer; and Brandon Parigo of RSVP Productions doing whatever it took in whichever department. A special shout out from K-Fed to Kat Stewart of Cable in the Classroom for patiently delivering to me a copy of the final product.

Hour Long Episodic
Client: Faith Roots Productions

"Fire by Nite" was an hour long monthly youth video club to over 5,000 church organizations. Estimated club viewers was over a half million teenagers. A year after the video was released to members, it was reformatted and edited into an internationally syndicated television show which takes the number of viewers quite a bit higher.

The show was a historic production for Nashville, Tennessee's Christian marketing machine. It boosted numerous contemporary Christian music artists' careers in the CCM industry, and is arguably the mechanism that created a market for CCM music videos.

It's funny...and weird. It's been about fifteen years since I directed this program. I still meet new people who grew up faithfully watching this show when I was there directing it, and can recall topics, sketches, names, and interviews from the show. In this last month, I've met two such people.

Oneighty is a franchised youth curriculum for churches. In addition to this stock footage campaign, I was involved in the design of the youth facilities which included a sanctuary, game room, and snack bar; design and formatting of curriculum; and production of all motion picture presentations.

This clip was one of our weekly video announcements. They were not very high priorities, so they were done very low budget and in no time. I had fun with them though. This one was shot right after lunch and I had it edited by the end of the day.

This investigative piece aired in April of 2005. I shot video over three nights while doing a ride along with a Lenexa, Kansas police officer. He headed up a federal grant program to hinder underage drinking in Lenexa.

The production caught the eye of CBS News who produced a story on Lenexa's program for "48 Hours".

I included this piece because of it's success and because it was all shot in the middle of three dark nights using only available light. (I did not shoot either of the sit-down interviews). I also managed to remain undetected from the occupants in the house allowing me to capture some very candid moments. I just wished I had the chance to edit this piece also.

I had the opportunity to take part in an investigative piece with Perverted Justice that made the federal courts, national headlines, network television specials, and was the talk at water coolers all over Kansas City for months. I still hear people talk about this story, two and a half years later, no less than once week.

I was one of three videographers who were involved in the confrontations (that's me with the camera in the first picture), and one of two that shot all other elements. (Such as the interview with an internet security expert in the second picture).

Our execution of the story became the standard for local stations to emulate across the country, and caused the networks to see the ratings potential for such a story. We ended up doing another gang buster series, doing the exact same thing one year later, and showed that not only was it still exciting to watch, but that it's still a major problem in our society.

Since our sequel one year later, Dateline NBC has purchased exclusive rights to work with Perverted Justice.

It was a fascinating experience.

This was an Investigative piece about an alleged corrupt minister.

Although I shot most, I did not shoot the entire piece.

Notice the silhouette shot. I was able to black out the woman's entire face in camera. (There was no picture data on the master tape that could be manipulated to pull out any details). The silhouette looked a bit too boring for me, so I manipulated the image in post to add a natural looking lens flare. I thought it was a nice touch.

There were two interviews that I didn't shoot and had unusable video due to less than desirable lighting and exposure. I played with both of them in the edit and was able to make them look at least acceptable. I wish I had a copy of the original to show you the before and after.
